Palatsinraitin silta ja pato

The Palatsinraitti bridge and dam

The Tammerkoski rapids that run through central Tampere will undergo some changes in the upper reaches. The dam walls will be renovated, and the dam itself will be completely rebuilt, together with a new bridge for pedestrian and light traffi c. All this improves the overall connections in the centre and makes the city a safer place.

The Palatsinraitti bridge will be constructed in several stages by the end of 2012. The first years of the renovation involve replacing the dam structures that date back to the early 1900’s. At the same time, the deteriorated dam walls will be replaced, and the Tampella and Finlayson hydroelectric power plants will be renovated. A new bridge for pedestrian and light traffic will be built in 2012 which will complement the centre’s cycling and walking routes, as well as combine the cultural vistas on both sides of the rapids.

The water level of Lake Näsijärvi has been regulated to below normal since September 2009, due to the dam construction work. Those who go boating or live close to the waterfront should observe the water levels and take caution when boating. Lowering the water level guarantees the safety of construction workers and citizens alike, even in rainier seasons.

The City of Tampere was founded in 1779 on the shores of the Tammerkoski rapids, close to the source of hydroelectric power. Tampereen Sähkölaitos (Tampere Power Utility) was founded in 1888. The Tammerkoski hydroelectric plants produce an average of 75 GWh of electricity each year.
